Etymology 1
region Q724 en Location of the state of Maine in the United States
The origin of the state's name is uncertain. It has been suggested that it was named after the province of Maine in France, and "later interpreted as signifying its status as the main part of the New England region", but others argue the name is originally from en main main(e) mainland.Matthews Albert Origins of the Name of Maine Cambridge, MA John Wilson and Son 1910 https://archive.org/details/originofnameofma00matt The state government says "there is no one, clear answer"; the name is first attested in 1622 and initially competed with several other names., which mentions other "interesting facts, which may have contributed to the establishment of our name: 1) there was a small village on the coast of England once named Maine; and, 2) Sir Gorges' family came from a village which neighbored "Broadmayne"; at various times, it was known as: Maine, Meine, and part of it was Parva Maen ("Little Maine")."

Mancall Pilgrims survived until the first Thanksgiving thanks to an epidemic that devastated Native Americans w:CNN https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/25/health/pilgrim-survival-disease-conversation-wellness 2019-11-25 These first English migrants to Jamestown endured terrible disease and arrived during a period of drought and colder-than-normal winters. The migrants to Roanoke on the outer banks of Carolina, where the English had gone in the 1580s, disappeared. And a brief effort to settle the coast of Maine in 1607 and 1608 failed because of an unusually bitter winter. https://web.archive.org/web/20220811070432/https://www.cnn.com/2019/11/25/health/pilgrim-survival-disease-conversation-wellness
