vær
Norwegian Bokmål
Etymology
nb non -veri inhabitant-forming suffix. The Old Norse element was used to form names for inhabitants or members of a group, as in non Rómverjar Romans.
The element is probably related to nb var wary, cautious, nb vare to warn, caution and nb verge to defend, protect, but the precise historical formation is uncertain.
Compare nn -vær and Icelandic is -verji inhabitant-forming suffix.
