esche esché
German
thumb|right|de Eine Esche – Fraxinus excelsior species|upright=1.4
Etymology
de gem-pro ine-pro 1
From de gmh esche f, gmh asch m, from de goh asca f, goh asc m, from de gmw-pro *ask.
The umlaut can be explained here from the plural of the masculine noun, though it may also be due to the secondary umlaut triggered by following -sch- which is found throughout western dialects of High German (compare de Äsche, where this is probably the cause of the umlaut).
