Dutch
Etymology
First attested as in stepele in 1450. Compound of an unclear first element and nl lo light forest. One hypothesis interprets the first element as a derivation of gem-pro *stapula pole, stick. Alternative etymologies include a reading of the first element as a term cognate to ang stêpel high tower or as la stipula stalk, reed. Compare nl Stipdonk, nl Stiphout and de Stiepel.
