Etymology
nb, based on the name of the island, which the Dutch named nl Mauritzeiland Maurits Island in 1598 after Maurice, Prince of Orange Maurits van Nassau, Prince of Orange and stadtholder of the Dutch Republic. The Dutch name consists of the personal name nl Maurits Maurice and nl eiland island. The modern country subsequently took its name from the island.
The personal name nl Maurits continues nb la Mauritius Maurice, an extension of nb la Maurus Moor; inhabitant of Mauretania, itself borrowed from nb grc Μαῦρος Moor. The ultimate origin of the Ancient Greek term is uncertain; one theory connects it with grc μαυρός black, from grc ἀμαυρός dark, dusky, while another derives it from a native name of the Moors.
Compare also Ancient Greek grc Μαυρίκιος Maurice and Latin la Mauricius Maurice, which may represent borrowing from the Greek form or parallel formation. Parallel international adaptations of the country name include nn Mauritius, da Mauritius, sv Mauritius, de Mauritius, fr Maurice and en Mauritius.
