Dutch
Etymology
First attested as rodanburg in 918-948. Compound of nl odt rōt red and odt burg fortified settlement, castle. Originally the name of a polder, named in turn after a former castle and nunnery. The toponym is potentially a reference to terra sigilata used by Roman soldiers to construct a military outpost near the current neighbourhood. Compare nl Aardenburg, de Rotenburg an der Fulda and en Rodbourgh.
