Etymology
Circa 1600, from de gml kabbelouw (14th c.), from de dum cabbeliau, dum cabelliau (12th c.), from de odt cabillau, possibly from de la baculum stick, staff, referring to the way cod were split and dried on wooden sticks. Or, with metathesis from/influenced by de eu bakailao cod, de pt bacalhau cod. The contemporary form was probably reinforced by modern de nl kabeljauw against variants like de Kabbelau, de Kabliau.
