From sv fi Kiiruna, clipping of sv se Gironvárris ptarmigan mountain (apparently giron "ptarmigan" + várri "mountain"), a mining mountain near the city which it was named after when it was founded. Giron was Finnishized to fi Kiiruna, which was Swedishized to sv Kiruna.
