thumb|A German.
Etymology
From en la Germānus, la Germānī (“the peoples of la Germānia”), as distinct from en Gauls (in the writings of Caesar and Tacitus), and of uncertain ultimate origin (possibly en cel/en cel-gau -).
Not related to en german closely related or en germane (from the Latin adjective la germānus, through Old French).
Attested since at least 1520. Replaced the older terms en Almain and en Dutch (from gem-pro *þiudiskaz) in English. Besides cognates of German, Almain, and Dutch, two other categories of words for the Germans in other languages are cognates of en Saxon and descendants of sla-pro *němьcь; see those entries for more.
The surname is generally from the noun, though sometimes confused with en Herman, en Hermann under Russian influence. As a en de - surname, Americanized from en Germann. Compare en Germán, en Germain, en Jerman.
