Etymology
1920 as a newly coined name based on the river name nb Orkla, with nb land land, territory as the second element. The first element ultimately reflects the reconstructed Old Norse river name non *Ork, of uncertain origin; it has traditionally been connected with non orka to work, labour, perhaps in reference to the river's strong current. The present municipality, established in 2020, reused the historical name.
Compare nb Orkanger and nb Orkdal, formed from the same river-name element.
