Etymology
Borrowed from en mk Охрид, from mk о- хрид mount, hill, elevation 1.
It has been proposed by Katičić that the modern name is a modified version of the ancient Greek name, where the transition of "Lychnidus" to "Ohrid" presupposes a characteristic sound development from en sq -. Same development as Nish from Naissos, Shtip from Astibos and Sharr from Scardus, which may have thereby entered Slavic. Katičić, Radoslav (1976). Ancient Languages of the Balkans. Mouton. p. 186. 9789027933157. On the other hand Niš from Ναϊσσός, Štip from Ἄστιβος, Šar from Scardus, and Ohrid from Lychnidus presuppose the sound development characteristic for Albanian.
