de gem-pro
From de la Suittes (attested 972), perhaps from the de goh - verb goh swīdan to burn, referring to a spot cleared by slash-and-burn, from de gmw-pro *swīþan; compare non svíða to burn, singe.
In the High Middle Ages recorded as Swiz or Switz, by the late 15th to early 16th century as Schwitz or Schwytz. The territory of Schwyz (the later canton) is recorded in Middle Latin as la vallis de Switz valley of Schwyz from circa 1300 (Federal Charter).
