English
Etymology
Norman French name borrowed from en fro malfé, fro malfeü, which in turn is derived from en la malefatus, la malefatutus, the perfect active participle of la malefor to speak ill, from en la male badly, wrong + en la for speak, say. The first part is from en itc-pro *malos, from en ine-pro *(s)mel- to deceive, cognate with lt melas lie and the first element of grc βλάσφημος jinx. The second part is from en itc-pro *fāōr, from en ine-pro *bʰéh₂ti to speak, cognate with the second element of grc βλάσφημος jinx.(2003). Morfin. In Hanks, P.
