Etymology
From earlier id Pasir, renamed to reflect its pronunciation (see also pronunciation spelling). This spelling was first used by the regency of Penajam North Paser Regency Penajam North Paser (Law No. 7 of 2002), and followed by Paser Regency Paser five years later (Government Regulation No. 49 of 2007). The name change has been followed by Tanah Grogot (or Tana Paser) in 2013, and the district of Paser Belengkong in 2015.
One folk etymology claims that this was taken from the purported Paser words pa "bright" and ser "spirit".Asal Usul Nama Penajam Paser Utara, Calon Ibu Kota Baru Indonesia However, this theory is highly unlikely, and better to consider its origin coming from id pasir sand based on pre-2007 name, which reflects its coastal geography. Cognate with id Pasig a city in the Philippines.
