First attested as cattindic in 1214. Compound of nl kat and nl dijk levee. The element nl kat is difficult to interpret; it may derive from dum katte earthen mound supported by beams and poles or be used in a metaphorical sense to refer to the poor quality of the levee. Compare nl Cadzand.
