Etymology
Originated in the notation for hexadecimal numbers in the C programming language (first major revision described in The C Programming Language, published 1978) and its descendants. Developed from an earlier #x used in BCPL, one of the ancestors of C. In BCPL, octal numbers used the # prefix (originally an underlined digit 8̲), which was changed into a preceding zero in B (programming language) B. B did not support hexadecimal literals, but C (which was developed from it) did by reintroducing the BCPL syntax and changing the preceding # (#x) to 0 (0x) by analogy.
