From *Vărlămaș + -anu, diminutive of ro Varlaam, from ro gkm Βαρλαάμ, itself likely borrowed from ro ka ბალაჰვარ. First attested c. 8th century as Arabic ar بِلَوْهَر, perhaps ultimately from ro sa भगवान्.
