English
Proper noun
en city/and/municipality in p:suf/Limburg c/Netherlands.
Dutch
Etymology
First attested as nl la-lat Coriouallum and la Corioualum around 300. Derived from a Germanic calque of an earlier Celtic name. The Germanic term is a compound of nl gem-pro *harja- army and gem-pro *walla wall. An alternative theory posits that the Germanic term was calqued into Celtic. Proposed derivations from gem-pro *harila small sandy ridge or a compound of odt her army and odt le burial mound are incorrect. Compare nl Heel and nl Heerle.
