English
Etymology
en (but cf. en Farne Islands). From en ang Lindisfarena. It is thought the first element refers to the Lindsey area of Lincolnshire (from Old English ang Lindesēġe). The second element -farne may be from en ang farena, genitive plural of ang fara traveller. Thus a plausible translation of the full name would be, "island of the travellers to and from Lindsey". Coates argued for an en sga - origin with from ga fearann territory, with the first part being en sga lind lake + sga -as; perhaps based on an equivalent en cel-bry-pro - formation.
