Usage notes
This slang term is a widespread cultural trope across the Philippines, used to poke fun at the casual or nominal religiosity of many citizens. In a deeply traditional society where religious devotion is highly visible, a KBL individual is someone who completely skips regular Sunday Masses, holy days of obligation, and community church activities. Instead, their presence in a place of worship is strictly transactional or social—dictated solely by invitation to a relative's wedding (kasal), acting as a godparent at a child's baptism (bunyag), or paying respects at someone's burial (lubong).
It is most frequently used in lighthearted banter, teasing among friends, or self-deprecatingly by individuals who freely admit they aren't pious but still identify with the cultural aspects of the faith.
