Alternative forms
de Maisch m
de Meische Meisch now substandard, but still encountered
Etymology
Alteration of older de Maisch, from de gmh meisch mash, from de goh *meisk, from de gmw-pro *maisk, from de gem-pro *maiskaz, from de ine-pro *moiḱ-sḱ-o/eh₂-, from ine-pro *meyḱ- mix. Cognate with en mash.
The spelling with -ai- is of Upper German origin. It is unusual insofar as modern ai-spellings in Germanic words are otherwise influenced by related words with -a- (e.g. de Maid) or the desire to distinguish homophones (e.g. de Laib). Perhaps due to the influence of southern German brewers and winemakers.
