First attested as apud griffillinc in 1294-1295. Derived from nl odt Griffilo a personal name or odt Gravilo a personal name with collectivising suffix odt -ing-. A proposed derivation from the hydronym nl Griffe (derived from nl odt *grefjô- dug watercourse) is less likely.
