Etymology
fi. Theories have included connection with a dialectal term fi roine roar, thunder, noise (~ fi roikua?) and a comparison to Indo-European ine-pro *kroyn-is (whence gem-pro *hrainiz clean, pure).
The surname and given name were inspired by depictions of the lake in popular literature in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as in poems by Zachris Topelius (especially Kesäpäivä Kangasalla) and Karl Collan fi.
