Early 17th century, of de unclear origin. Hypotheses include:Regal#1
Derived from de gem-pro *rīgǭ *rigǭ ~ *rīgǭ ~ *rīhǭ, whence de Riege and de Reihe (both originally “row, line”).
Derived from de la rēgula, whence de Riegel bar, latch, nl richel bar, latch”, dialectally also “rack.
In both of the above cases the derivative must have been influenced by Latin or Romance. Earlier de nds Riole shelving points to confluence with a word for “drainage, sewer” (nl riool, gml reōle),"reōle", koeblergerhard.de which may ultimately be from the same sources as above. Another theory conjectures an de it *rigale, derived from it riga line by analogy with it scaffale (from it scaffa). Finally, formal influence by etymology 2 below is possible.
