Finnish
Etymology
fi Nousi(j)a inen. At least the surname is most likely from the pre-Christian male name fi Nousia (from fi nousija), but the two senses are not directly connected as the surname is a Savonian fi -(i)nen-type surname, while the parish is located in Finland Proper. The name of the Southwest Finnish municipality could perhaps more likely derive from earlier fi nousijan mäki riser's/climber's hill (as in hill one has to ascend to); this would refer to the high hill on which the church was still located in the late 19th century. The place name is first attested as fi Nousia in 1232.30
