Etymology
pt roa-opt Estremadura, presumably related to es Extremadura, which is in turn may come from pt la Extrēma Dūriī, alluding to the fact that those regions are located beyond the Douro river. In the case of the Portuguese region, later reinterpreted as being the "extreme" (that is, westernmost region) of mainland Portugal and Europe. It's thus possible then that the ⟨s⟩ could be intrusive or otherwise unetymological (perhaps under the influence of pt Estrímnio), but, in the abscence of a clear etymology, the same could be said for the alternative ⟨x⟩.
Pronunciation
pt uɾɐ 5
pt Es tre ma du ra
pt
Proper noun
f
pt traditional region in western-central mainland c/Portugal
pt Estremadura Portuguesa<qq:rare>
pt Extremadura an autonomous community in western Spain
pt Estremadura Leonesa<qq:rare>
Usage notes
pt Estremadura (with an ⟨s⟩) is favored when referring to the Portuguese region, in contrast with pt Extremadura (with an ⟨x⟩) which is favored when speaking of the Spanish region.
The en epithet pt Leonesa may be (rarely) used in speech to distinguish the Spanish region from the Portuguese one.
