Punjabi
Etymology 1
Likely pa inc-apa -अहो -aho 1, the plural vocative case for masculine inc-apa -अ stems. Similar variations of this suffix are found for vocative cases of feminine stems and other masculine stems in Apabhramsa, from pa pra -𑀆𑀳𑁄, ultimately a univerbation of pa sa -आः, the vocative plural of pa sa -अ, and pa sa भोः॑ from sa भव॑त्.
Suffix
pa suffix
case ending for unextended nouns (masculine and feminine):
plural vocative case
Usage notes
For masculine extended nouns ending in pa -ਆ, the singular oblique case pa -ਏ shortens to pa -ਇ when suffixed with pa -ਓ to form pa -ਇਓ. This vowel shortening does not occur with feminine extended nouns ending in pa -ਈ, which have the plural vocative case suffix pa -ਈਓ.
Etymology 2
pa inc-apa -अहु -ahu second person present indicative/imperative plural, from pa pra -𑀅𑀳, from pa sa -अथ, from pa iir-pro *-atʰa, from pa ine-pro *-ete second person present indicative/imperative plural.
