Etymology
fr :inh frm:-ané +
fr frm -ané, from fr la -āneus (from 1 la -ānus -eus), whence also fr -ain<id:-aneous> 1.
In modern French, only words descending from Latin borrowings of Greek origin ending in the suffixes la -ēus borrowing/la -ēum borrowing, la -aeus/la -aeum (and exceptionally la -ius/la -ium, as in fr élysée/fr Élysée) are written with fr -ée in the masculine.
Words descending from Latin words in la -āneus are now written with the ending fr -ané. The first four editions of the Dictionnaire de l'Académie française spelled these words with fr -anée before adopting the current spelling in the fifth edition.
