Latin
Etymology
Possibly la itc-pro *-ēntnos//*-entnos 1, see la -undus. As with the present participle ending la -ēns -ēns, -ent-, the vocalism with la -en- for gerundives of third-conjugation verbs is based on generalization of a PIE zero-grade ine-pro *-n̥-. For second-conjugation verbs, la -end- instead represents stem-final vowel la -ē- + la -nd- with regular shortening of a vowel before the cluster la -nd-; compare 1st-conjugation la -andus.
Cognates include xum *-𐌄𐌍𐌔 (as attested in xum anferener 𐌀𐌍𐌚𐌄𐌓𐌄𐌍𐌄𐌓 genitive singular gerundive).
