French
Etymology
From fr frm - and fr fro Gascoigne, from fr la-med Gasconia, from fr la-vul Wasconia, from fr la Vasconia, from la Vascones + la -ia, from fr grc Οὐάσκωνες, as used by Strabo in his 1st-century Geographica, Book III.Larry Trask, The History of Basque Routledge: 1997 0-415-13116-2 Variously derived from grc αἴξ goat (literally “he-goat people”) or a variant of en Ausci (from which en Aquitan, en Occitan, and perhaps related to en Euskara). Cognate to en Basque. Compare en Gascon.
For sound changes: /v/ → /w/ occurred in the change from Latin to Proto-Romance, while /w/ → /g/ common in (non-Iberian) Romance languages, notably French; compare en warranty and en guarantee, en William and en Guillaume. By contrast, /v/ developed into /b/ and /β̞/ in Spanish and Gascon, under influence of Basque, hence the divergence.
