Etymology
Borrowed (and phonetically adapted) from de gml gelach, de gelōch. Pertaining to de legen to lay and hence originally “food and drink laid on the table”. Now often associated more closely with de liegen to lie and interpreted as “party where people lie down drunk”. Compare nl gelag.
