English
Etymology
en :inh enm:-yf 1
From en enm -yf, from en xno -if from en la -īvus. Until the fourteenth century, all Middle English loanwords from Anglo-Norman ended in enm -if (compare enm actif, enm natif, enm sensitif, enm pensif etc.). Under the influence of literary Neo-Latin, both languages introduced the form en -ive. Those forms that have not been replaced were subsequently changed to end in en -y (compare en hasty, from enm hastif, en jolly, from enm jolif etc.).
Like the Latin suffix -iō (genitive -iōnis), the Latin suffix -ivus is appended to the perfect passive participle to form an adjective of action.
