Usage notes
While the Vedic accent is generally on the suffix, it can also shift to previous syllable: for example sa अ॒र्थय॑ति from sa अर्थ॑.
When the vowel immediately preceding this suffix is short sa -अ- -á-, this collides with the causative suffix sa -अय॑ति. This would lead many such verbs to be later rebracketed—for example, sa चोर thief + sa -यति → sa चोरयति to thieve was later rebracketed as sa चोर्- + sa -अयति, from which the artificial zero-grade root form sa चुर् to thieve is inferred and then sa चोरयति is said to be a "Class 10" verb from sa चुर्.
