kieme
German
Etymology
16th century, from de gml kime, gml kimme. This is most plausibly an alteration of gml kiwe jawbone, gill after unrelated gml kimme slit, groove, whence also German de Kimme 1. The former pertains to de kauen to chew and is cognate with gmh kiwe jawbone, gill, nl kieuw gill.
