Etymology
Via other European languages, ultimately borrowed from lv la Syria (adapted to fit Latvian patterns, lv ija), itself a borrowing from lv grc Συρία, perhaps a shortened form of grc Ἀσσυρία, possibly from Akkadian Ashshur, the name of the chief city of the Assyrian kingdom, and also of the main Assyrian deity.
