Etymology
nb, based on Latvian lv Latvija Latvia. The Latvian name is a 19th-century formation from lv latvis Latvian, Lett and the country-name suffix lv -ija. It is first recorded in a Latvian text in 1862 and became established later in the century.
The underlying ethnonym is considerably older, but its deeper origin is uncertain. A connection with a local river name has been proposed.
