Etymology
First attested as elburg in 1225. Etymology nl 1. Several interpretations of El- have been proposed, ranging from a personal name to a reference to the city being located on an elevated section of land to a derivation from a term related to nl elleboog elbow (impossible because of the presence of -n- in older forms of the word, see dum elne elbow). A derivation from nl dum *helberg hill among low-lying terrain is also unlikely. The use of ter elborch implies that the second element is nl dum borch castle, fortified settlement. See also nl Elspeet.
