Etymology
nb, ultimately from nb fr Séchelles, the name given to the French possession in 1756 in honour of Jean Moreau de Séchelles, then France's Controller-General of Finances. The British later changed the spelling to en Seychelles, which became the international form; Norwegian nb Seychellene adapts this name as a definite plural.
The territorial name fr Séchelles in Jean Moreau de Séchelles's surname referred to the seigneurie of Séchelles at Cuvilly in Oise, France, which was acquired by the Moreau family in the early 18th century. The deeper etymology of the French place-name Séchelles is uncertain.
Parallel adaptations include nn Seychellane, sv Seychellerna, de Seychellen and en Seychelles.
