pt Brazilian state
The hydronym is a corruption of earlier pt Aquiri, of pt 1 origin. The Brazilian state was named after the river.
A widespread etymology proposed by Teodoro Sampaio says it comes from tpw tpw akyr<t:green> 'y<t:river>,pt Sampaio:1901 108 misunderstanding the meaning of tpw akyr: it is “green” in the sense of “unripe”, not the colour — that would be tpw oby. Also, the region was never inhabited by speakers of Old Tupi to have an endonym in that language.
