Norwegian Bokmål
en:Å,no:Å (bokstav),en:Aa (surname)
Pronunciation
nb /oː/
nb oː 1
nb Å å aa
nb Aa
Etymology 1
From the older Danish–Norwegian digraph ⟨Aa⟩, used to represent the long vowel which developed from Old Norse non á /ɑː/. The doubling of ⟨a⟩ originally indicated vowel length. In mainland Scandinavian, the vowel became rounded to /ɔː/ and was later raised to /oː/ in many varieties.
The Swedish letter ⟨Å⟩ developed graphically by writing the second ⟨a⟩ above the first, where it was eventually reduced to a ring. Norwegian retained ⟨Aa⟩ for several centuries under Danish orthographic influence. ⟨Å⟩ was permitted in Riksmål in 1907 and officially replaced ⟨Aa⟩ in ordinary Norwegian spelling through the spelling reform of 1917.
Letter
nb letter m lower case aa definite singular Aa-en indefinite plural Aa-er definite plural Aa-ene
The uppercase form of nb aa, formerly used in place of nb Å, the twenty-ninth and final letter of the Norwegian Bokmål alphabet.
Usage notes
The spelling ⟨Aa⟩ was replaced by ⟨Å⟩ in ordinary Norwegian words and official place names in 1917.
It remains in established personal names and certain other proper names, such as nb Haakon and nb Aase.
When ⟨Aa⟩ represents ⟨Å⟩, it is alphabetized together with ⟨Å⟩ at the end of the Norwegian alphabet.
The sequence may also be used as a substitute for ⟨Å⟩ when the latter character is unavailable, although modern Norwegian normally retains ⟨Å⟩.
