German
Alternative forms
de Hülfe obsolete, used in variation until the early 20th century
Etymology
From de gmh helfe, gmh hilfe, from de goh helfa, goh hilfa, from de gmw-pro, from de gem-pro *helpō, gem-pro *hilpiz help, from de gem-pro *helpaną to help, from de ine-pro *ḱelb-, ine-pro *ḱelp- to help. Among the three Middle High German variants de helfe, hilfe, hülfe, the i-form is phonetically intermediate, but in Modern German the northern de Hülfe was long predominant. de Hilfe was supported, however, by the parallelism with de du hilfst, er hilft, and was declared the exclusive standard during the spelling reforms of the early 20th century.
