Etymology
From de gmh brunne, from de goh brunno, from de gmw-pro *brunnō, from de gem-pro *brunnô, whence also ang burna, non brunnr; ultimately from de ine-pro *bʰrun- a bubbling forth; a fountain, wellspring, source.
The form is Upper German, most Low and Central German dialects using de Born (now poetic in the standard language). This southern origin also explains the vocalism; the expected form is de Bronnen with -u- → -o- before a nasal geminate.
