English
Etymology 1
The earliest alleged form is ang Cegeham in 727, referencing a prior land grant from 675. From this, Eilert Ekwall proposes an origin from en ang *ceg + ang hām, where the first element is from a Germanic root possibly meaning "stump".9853287118b47fc40c23000ab0 While the 727 document is of dubious authenticity,'Parishes: Cheam', in A History of the County of Surrey: Volume 4, ed. H E Malden (London, 1912), pp. 194–199. British History Online (accessed 12 May 2018) the name ang Cegham or ang Ceiham is attested in various other sources, such as a will from c. 950.A.D. 946 x 947. Will of Ealdorman Æthelwold
