German
Alternative forms
de Gehöfte obsolete
Etymology
From de gmh gehüfte, so attested 1309 in Königsdorf near Cologne; later also in East Central German de gehoffte (and variants). Collective formation from de Hof yard, farmyard, farm. Regarding the Dutch colonisation in the east, it is possible that the German word goes back to de dum -, in which dum ghehuchte, dum ghehochte, from de odt *gihufti, is older and commoner. Plausibly the same is also true of rare gml gehüchte. Compare modern nl gehucht hamlet.
