Etymology
Unclear. First attested as fi Ahwenan maan (genitive) in 1648. One theory derives the name from fi gmq-pro *ᚨᚺᚹᚢᛚᚨᛞᚨ, the first part of which the Finnic peoples would have associated with fi ahven perch. According to the same theory the Swedish name of the islands, sv Åland, would come from the same origin.
Another theory, proposed by Schalin (2008), is that the word was originally borrowed from early fi gem-pro *agwiōz archipelago into fi urj-fin-pro - as urj-fin-pro *ahvëh or urj-fin-pro *ahvë- and then re-borrowed back into gmq-pro - as gmq-pro ahwē or gmq-pro ahwe, which would later become gmq-osw *ā- in gmq-osw *āland > sv Åland.Schalin, Johan (2008): Ahuen maa ja Alandh Sananjalka 50: 24–37.
