Dutch
Etymology
First attested as in niirsen in 1335-1336. Etymology nl unknown. The hamlet's location next to a stream suggests that the toponym might be derived from an ancient hydronym derived in turn from ine-pro *ner- penetrate, dive, hide oneself or ine-pro *nor-. An etymological relationship with de Neersen in Westphalia is unlikely because of divergent vocalism in the oldest attestations. Compare nl Neer.
