Etymology
First attested as zeuenghe waet in 1326. Compound of nl dum seuen seven and dum gewald power, domain. Perhaps derived from the fact that seven parties were empowered to use the common lands near the settlement. A proposed derivation from nl dum savelboom savin, Juniperus sabina is incorrect. The current "German" spelling of the name derives from the time when the village belonged to the Duchy of Jülich (see also nl Bocholtz and nl Einighausen).
