Etymology
en :bor fr:Lisbonne 1
As the capital of Portugal, from en fr Lisbonne, from en ar لِشْبُونَة, from en la Olisīpō, the origin of which is uncertain.Jack Malcolm, Lisbon: City of the Sea: A History (2007) Older spellings include la Ulixbona and la Ulixbuna (in the Visigothic era); grc Ὀλισσιπών or grc Ὀλισσιπόνα (by Greek writers), la Olisippo (by Pliny the Elder), and la Ulyssippo (by Pomponius Mela of Hispania), the last of which relates to the first-century Roman folk etymology that it was founded by and named after Ulysses; another common folk etymology is the phn 𐤏𐤋𐤉𐤑 𐤏𐤁𐤀 ʿaliṣ-ʿuboʾ safe harbour, but there is not much evidence for such words. Another possibility, based on hydronymy of the area, derives the name from en qsb-ibe's appellation for the Tagus, und Lisso or und Lucio.
In other senses, with reference to the Portuguese city.
