Appendix:Variations of "er"
Armenian
Etymology
From hy xcl -եար, which was used for forming collective nouns, e.g. xcl նաւկնեար boats, xcl քաջորեար brave men, etc.
Pronunciation
Suffix
hy suffix inflectional suffixes
plural nominative case marker for monosyllabic words
hy շներ nominative plural of hy շուն 1
Usage notes
As Dum-Tragut writes, this plural formation is also applied to polysyllabic compound nouns the last element of which is a monosyllabic word, which is interpreted as nominal, e.g. hy հեռագիր telegraph : hy հեռագրեր telegraphs, hy պայմանագիր contract : hy պայմանագրեր contracts, etc. If, however, the monosyllabic lexeme (the last element of the compound) is interpreted as being deverbal, the plural suffix hy -ներ must be used, e.g. hy դասատու teacher from hy -տու from hy տալ to give : hy դասատուներ teachers, hy պատմագիր historian from hy -գիր from hy գրել to write : hy պատմագիրներ historians, etc.
