Etymology
From en hi जाट, ultimately from en sa जर्तिक, of further unknown origin. Initially the name of a low-ranking tribe of Vahika (now in Punjab) mentioned in some Sanskrit-language Hindu texts such as the Mahabharata's Karna Parva, its descendant names, from en inc-ash *𑀚𑀝𑁆𑀝, were later used to refer to various different low-ranking groups of peoples living in the regions of Sindh and Punjab. Many other theories about the origin of this name exist, but are unproven and speculative; see Getae#Fringe views on alternative origins Getae for one such example.
